Being the smallest hill station in the nation and a municipal council in Maharashtra, Matheran is located in Karjat Tahsil. It is at an elevation of about 800 metres from sea level and around 90 km from the city of Mumbai. Matheran is one of the few places which is a year-round destination for tourists. The Irshalgad is a fortress found between Panvel and Matheran. You will find many water cisterns in this area which have been cut from rocks. This is a sister fort to Prabalgad. The Prabal Fort which is located in the Prabal Hills was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from the Mughals and is quite a popular historic place. Shivaji’s Ladder are a series of steps which are shaped like a ladder and can prove to be quite challenging for the most experienced of trekkers and adventurists. It is the downward journey from One Tree Hill. The Neral-Matheran toy train is a unique experience where you witness the beauty of the valleys with the one-way journey taking around 2 hours. Matheran is quite famous for an array of items such as Kolhapuri footwear, simple handicraft items, honey and chikki which are famous nation-wide. The Mall road is another very famous shopping spree in the city.
